Four Candles

Kate said she wanted cupcakes for her birthday. Since she was turning four, and she has four letters in her name, I had this idea to spell out her name on four cupcakes. (I suppose we can do the same thing for Andy when he turns four.) We had everything ready to go Friday night, but of course were interrupted by a birth. So we had a postpartum party on Monday, after I got home from the hospital.

I used the Poor Man's Cake recipe, frosted with cream cheese and honey. I figured if I was going to make cupcakes, it might as well be something I could eat. (Kate was mostly interested in the party and blowing-out-the-candles aspect.)

Doug made the letters out of Starburst fruit chews. We just recently learned that you can mold them like clay. Fun! Kate put the candles on.

I'm not sure if there's a way to avoid those reflection spots from the flames--perhaps a lens hood would help?

Kate had opened a couple of presents ahead of time, but we saved some for our party.

A doll and clothes, in a cute little personalized trunk, from the Ahlstrom grandparents.

When Kate opened this one, she said, "Oh, it's a bag!"

It's a chipmunk! From Aunt Barb and Uncle Kyle.

Awww. They also sent a book, The Girl's Like Spaghetti (about apostrophes), that Kate thinks is pretty funny, though she can't really understand it yet.

I was just telling Doug that we could have wrapped up Andy and had her open him. Ha. It was certainly a memorable birthday. We hope Kate will agree that the best present was her new little brother!

The pictures are great. However did you learn about molding the fruit chews? I'm glad Kate got to have her fun birthday after all. Who cares if it's a little late. :-)

Love, Mom
