Andy's First Haircut

Kate had her first haircut at four and a half. Obviously we couldn't wait that long for Andy.  Unfortunately he was much less composed about the whole experience.  All my pictures turned out like this:

Poor little guy. He was not happy! Fortunately it didn't take very long.

"Get this thing off me!"

All done. (Whew!)

Back home and smiling again! Doesn't he look handsome?

Kate's haircut, mark 2

We got Kate's hair cut right before I went to Utah (mostly so Doug wouldn't have to deal with all the brushing trauma). It had been over a year since her first haircut, so it was getting pretty long again. Doug took her to Wild Child and she came home with this cute little braid.

I can't braid her hair for swimming and gymnastics anymore. She finished her first swimming lessons at the YMCA, and yesterday she started another session of gymnastics. Andy and I went along and had fun kicking balls around during Kate's class. In the drop-in zone I ran into some of the kids from my photography class, and some of the leaders who helped me out. That was kind of fun. (The photography class seems like a long time ago, already!)

Engineer Haircuts

During our Ohio visit I thought I'd take advantage of my dad's mad engineering skills and have him cut my hair. I was just going to take off a few inches, but Betsey was cutting hers to donate, so I decided to do it too. (I was kind of surprised that it had grown enough to donate again in just two years--must be those prenatal vitamins!)

Here's the "before" picture (Betsey's on the left--she's not really taller than me; she's standing a bit uphill).

(Lovely shot of the top of Dad's head.) Betsey was wearing this shirt with horizontal stripes, and as Dad measured and started cutting, he said, "Hey, this is easy!" Ha. So when it was my turn I put on the shirt too. (When Kate saw me in Betsey's shirt, she said, "Who is that? Are you Mama?")

You're supposed to have at least ten inches to donate, so I told Dad eleven inches, thinking that would take care of the uneven ends. He measured it at eleven inches from the shortest part, so it ended up a little shorter than I was expecting. It's not long enough to stay put behind my shoulders, but just long enough to get in the way.

I didn't really get an "after" shot, but you'll see it in future posts. (Soon!)

Kate's haircut

Kate got her first haircut! I was planning to get her hair cut anyway, before going to Ohio, and then while we were down at the farmer's market we won a gift certificate for a free child's haircut at a place downtown called Embellish. Great timing!

My attempt at a "before" picture.

The girl who cut her hair did a great job. She put it in a little ponytail first and cut that off, and gave us the ponytail to take home.

Everyone kept commenting on how mature she was. (I think mostly she was just kind of stiff because she didn't know what to expect.)

She thought the towel was fun. ("It's like a hat!")

Dad watches.

This one just made me laugh, the way she's kicking back in the chair with her legs crossed.

"Is that my hair?"

The new 'do!

We went over to the Learning Sprout for a while, and got her a special treat. She was so good getting her hair cut!

I guess I won't be able to braid Kate's hair again for a while. But it sure is easier to brush now. Yay!

Braids and Curls

I've been braiding Kate's hair at night to keep it from getting tangled. Sometimes I curl the ends by laying the ponytail holder along a pencil, wrapping the hair around, and fastening. This is what it looks like when we take the braids out:

Kate does have a slight wave to her hair (she gets that from her daddy), so it holds the curl better than mine does.

Hair today

I donated my hair! I've been thinking about doing this for a while--the last time I got my hair trimmed was right after Kate was born, and it had gotten all ragged and uneven, plus it was taking forever to dry after I took a shower (which can make things difficult when you're, say, trying to get to church on time). So I finally bit the bullet and went and did it. They took off about twelve inches. I wanted it long enough that I could still put it back in a ponytail, for swimming and stuff. I haven't figured out yet exactly what I'm going to do with it, but I imagine it'll be nice for summer. Here are the after pictures:

I told Doug that last one was my Alan Doyle impersonation, but his hair is cooler than mine.
