sidewalk chalk layout

Challenge #3 of the Amazing Digi Scrapping Race was to do a page about something our family likes to do, and design the layout to represent the activity (say, if you enjoy playing Monopoly together, you could make a page to look like the Monopoly board). I had a hard time picking something. What do we all like to do? LEGO? Reading? I suppose I could take pictures of everyone playing on the computer.

I decided to go with sidewalk chalk.  We have been doing that a lot lately.

I thought doing the title in chalk would probably fit the requirement of the referential design. I wrote the titles on the sidewalk but then discovered that they were too big to fit in the frame (with my lack of wide angle lens), so I had to bring out a chair to stand on while I took the pictures.

I also made a border with my crayon line, which you can get here.

Chalk Dragon

On Friday it was finally not raining, so we went out and drew on the sidewalk with our neighbors Glory and Sky.  Last year's chalk was all worn down to itty-bitty nubbins, so Doug had gotten us some new chalk the day before.

I drew this big dragon and the girls colored it in.  Now some of our new chalk is worn down to itty-bitty nubbins too.

Kate finishes up the tail.

We discovered that Andy knows his colors. Or at least some of them. I asked him to bring me the yellow chalk, and he did!

Chalk Numbers

Sidewalk chalk with Andy. It was raining (just a light sprinkle) but not too cold, so I just put his hood up and we went out anyway.

He's been practicing numbers lately.  He can say 1, 2, 6, 8, 9, and 10 pretty well.  Pronunciation is not so clear on the others.  (He often says "eight" for 3--it does look like half an 8!)   He'd hand me a piece of chalk and I'd write all the numbers, and then he'd go over to the bucket and get another color.  Over and over (and over) till the sidewalk was all covered with numbers.

And of course Mom had to sneak in some picture taking.

After a while Kate came out and joined us.  She found some lines to color in.

I had to get a picture of the pussy willows.  (Just like  a few years ago, but without the screaming.)

"Come on, Mom!  Put down the camera and  take this chalk, already!"

Andy has added "Chalk!" to his very small list of words.  He's very clear about letting us know when he wants to get the chalk and go outside.

Andy, with a bit of color

Andy loves drawing (he's always getting into Kate's markers--fortunately he hasn't figured out how to get the caps off, yet) and he loves being outside. Sidewalk chalk provides a great combination of these two favorite pastimes. I don't have to worry about what he might be drawing on, and the chalk also keeps him occupied enough that I don't have to keep herding him away from the parking lot every five seconds. Win-win!

Another future artist!

Chalk Neighbors

Sidewalk chalk with the Kim girls! (This shot sort-of-indirectly-inspired by Color Me Katie.)

Our sidewalk chalk was worn down to teeny-tiny nubbins (and then we used up the nubbins) so we picked up a new set at Target. It turns out our neighbors have the same set!

(This was actually last week, but I had to get permission to post the pictures of the girls.)

Today we went out and drew some more. Andy got ahold of a piece of chalk, and he was making some marks on my drawing, then toddling over to Glory's drawing and making some marks on hers, back and forth, back and forth. It was so cute.

Waiting for Spring!

Bipartisan Porch Tactics

January 19th. A nice day, warmish--in fact my temperature thing on the computer says it's 60 degrees. Kate wants to go outside and paint the porch.

Andy wants to go out too. I should be able to keep both kids happy at the same time, right?

I hope.

Kate is using chalk and water. A mixed-media experience.

So far so good!

(Isn't this jacket cute? It has appliqued antennae in the hood. Scott brought it back from Disneyland for us.)

Andy, stay out of the water! Oh, what the heck. It's 60 degrees.

I can change him when we go back inside.

Kate! Don't splash your brother! Well, don't splash him much.

"Who, me?"

Evidence of splashing.

"Aaaaaaahhh!"

"The chalk is mine! Mine!"

Time for dry clothes!
