Eight Things (tag)

I have added Mary to the list of blogs that I stalk, for her gorgeous photography, beautiful children, and her stunning wit. (And for some reason her updates don't show up on my Bloglines, so I have to actually check her blog regularly to see if there's anything new.) I checked the other day and was aghast to see that she had tagged me.

Eight things I did yesterday:

1. Played two games of Go Fish with Kate, while keeping one leg in barrier position to keep Andy from eating the cards.

2. Edited a couple of photos for Scott, of the mural on one of the buildings downtown that he manages (which I am not helping to restore--the mural, that is).

3. Dropped off a small box of clothes at the consignment store and then ran down to Trader Joe's for a few things.

4. Crocheted a bit (I think that was yesterday?)

5. Fielded questions from the neighbor kids, like, "Can Kate come outside?" ("If she wants to.") "Can Andy come outside?" ("Ummmmm.....")

6. Tried on three shirts that arrived from Kohls and decided they were all keepers.

7. Warmed up bacon lentil soup for dinner. I love having leftovers. I make leftovers on purpose.

8. I was going to give Kate a bath, but she was feeling a bit peaky. We'll have to do that tonight.

Eight favorite shows:

(Of the shows that I actually watch...)

1. Chuck

2. Monk

3. Psych

(and for the rest I guess I'll have to go to shows that aren't actually on anymore)

4. Firefly, of course.

5. Stargate SG-1 (though I'd have to say I didn't enjoy the later seasons quite as much).

6. Highlander

7. Farscape (we came to it late and missed out on large chunks).

8. I have a big soft spot for The Greatest American Hero, though I fear it may not have aged too well.

Eight favorite restaurants:

I don't know if I've even been to eight different restaurants here. Let me think....

1. My very favorite restaurant will always be Bruno's in St. John's, Newfoundland, where I painted my first mural. It was such a great experience, and the food and hospitality were fabulous. Bruno died suddenly right after we left. I hear the restaurant is still there, but it's called Cioppino's now.

2. I Love Bento

3. I'm still mourning the loss of Federico's, which was a great little Mexican place that had the best carne asada and carnitas. So good. We used to go there about once a week.

4. Vien Dong (which we first heard about from one of Doug's students)

5. Chevy's, just because we end up going there every couple of months. Kate likes to play with their dough balls.

6. Bombay Bistro (a bit more expensive than the typical Indian lunch buffet, but really yummy).

7. Cerello's pizza (local, run by Koreans, and they're closed on Sunday! And the pizza is quite tasty).

8. O Bok Jip or Chung Ki Wa, down in Lakewood (they're right across the street from each other and we pretty much just alternate. Today we went to O Bok Jip).

Eight things I look forward to:

1. Fall, because I love fall!

2. A new Miles Vorkosigan book (Yay!)

3. Having a house of our own. Some day.

4. Painting more murals.

5. Going back to Korea some day.

6. I've been doing some de-junking and rearranging, and I'm looking forward to making my space a space that I'm pleased with and happy to be in. I'm even planning some decorating.

7. I have some more crocheting ideas that I'm eager to try out.

8. When Kate turns five, I'm going to read her No Flying in the House. That was the first book I read to my brother, when he was five.

Eight people I tag:

1. Heather T.

2. Ida

3. Laura Call

4. Amy B.

5. Bronwyn

6. You!

7. Jeanette

8. Jessica (You can do this on Facebook. You know, if you want.)

25 random things

I got tagged (by three different people) with this "25 random things" that's going around Facebook. I thought I'd post it here too.

1. I love reading in bed, but I always fall asleep.

2. I think a really good navel orange is one of the best things in the world.

3. I've done laundry every day since Andy was born.

4. I like doing things with people but I'm not good at initiating stuff.

5. I've painted five murals. One is in an Italian restaurant and one's in a closet.

6. I crave stability and spontaneity. It's a conundrum.

7. I have a collection of books in Korean. I've even read some of them.

8. I love sorting, but I'm not an organized person.

9. I'd like to be a foodie, but generally I just don't make cooking a high enough priority.

10. My husband has more shoes than I do.

11. Lois McMaster Bujold is my favorite author ever.

12. My 20 year high school reunion is this summer. I've realized I'm not really interested at all.

13. I love feeding animals, and have a particular fondness for ducks and squirrels.

14. I always notice grammatical errors, but I think the "no ending a sentence with a preposition" thing is a purely artificial rule based on Latin and has absolutely nothing to do with English.

15. We have a TV but it's not hooked up. We just use it for watching videos.

16. I do a lot of diaper-changing on the bed. I like to live dangerously.

17. I love Atlantic Canadian dialects.

18. My hobbies have a way of turning into obligations. This is occasionally frustrating.

19. I'm interested in words and language, but I'm not very good at Scrabble.

20. I wish I lived closer to my family.

21. I enjoy listening to DVD commentaries (some are more interesting than others, of course).

22. I want to go to North Korea some day.

23. I have a low amusement threshold but I don't enjoy "dumb" movies.

24. I fear I may not be very successful at teaching people to crochet.

25. I have too much stuff and nowhere to put it. I need a garage.

Six quirks

I've been tagged by Ida. Someone did tag me with this six quirks thing a while ago, and I couldn't think of six. But I've been filing things away in my brain since then, so here goes.

1. I almost always play computer games with the sound off. (Not that I play a lot of computer games these days, after discovering Photoshop.)

2. I often eat things without condiments. (Partly because of my food problems, but not entirely.)

3. It takes a great concerted effort on my part not to pronounce ostrich as "ostridge." I sure don't know why.

4. When eating almonds, I like to kind of rub the point into the corner of my lips before putting it in my mouth. It's like a tactile tic. Actually I just did this with a saltine cracker, too, so I guess it's not just almonds.

5. I get a kick out of that tight-turn maneuver where you crank the steering wheel around with one hand and then let it spin back through your hands. I remember admiring the technique as a child, and always get a little thrill when I get to do it.

6. When doodling animals, I almost always start with the ear. I mentioned this to my mom once and she said she does the same thing, so I guess I got it from her.

Ummmm... I hate choosing people to tag. Anyone feeling quirky?

Photo tag

This is a tag from my sister-in-law, Karen. You're supposed to go to your "My Pictures" folder, pick the fourth folder, and post the fourth photo in that folder. Well, I do have a "My Pictures" folder but it doesn't have anything in it. So I had the computer do a search for all image file (48,948 files found--yikes!) and then picked the fourth one that was actually one of my pictures and not something from the 2007 Camp Leader Guidebook, not a scan of Doug's driver's license, and not a graphic created in Corel Draw. Here's what I got:

This is Kate at six weeks, doing her "sardonic baby" impression. I've always loved this photo, though the focus is a bit off. I haven't seen her doing the one-eyebrow thing lately. Maybe she can't do it anymore.

Husband Tag

I've seen this husband tag meme going around recently. I've been tagged by Bronwyn, so here goes!

What is his name? Douglas Martinous Jole. Martinous is a family name.
How long have you been married? Just over twelve years. (How time flies!)
How long did you date? Let's see... started dating right before Christmas, engaged in April, married in September.
How old is he? He's 43. Six years older than me.
Who eats more sweets? Ha. That would be him, since I can't eat sugar. If the question was just "Who eats more" that would probably be me. Even when I'm not pregnant.
Who said I love you first? He did.
Who is taller? We're very close to the same height. I think I'm actually a teeny bit taller, if we're both in bare feet.
Who can sing better? We both enjoy singing (I sing alto, he sings tenor, unless he's got a cold) but he's definitely better at sight reading than I am. And he has this knack for instantly grasping the structure of a song and will often make up his own voice accompaniment for a song he's never heard before.
Who does the laundry? Me, almost always.
Who sleeps on the right side of the bed? I do. Though when we were in Korea I slept on the left side. I think it was just the setup of the room.
Who mows the lawn? We don't have a lawn, but I imagine he would probably do it.
Who cooks dinner? Depending on his schedule, Doug does sometimes do a lot of the cooking. I tend to make the same things all the time, and he gets more creative.
Who pays the bills? I do.
Who drives? Any time we're going somewhere all together, he always drives. If we're on a long trip we'll take turns, but he still ends up driving the most.
Who is more stubborn? I don't know if I could really describe either of us as stubborn. We're both pretty laid back.
Who kissed who first? He started it. ;)
Who asked who out first? We had some friends in common at BYU, then ended up in the same ward and then got called to team-teach Gospel Doctrine together. He asked me out first (I think the first time he made me dinner, and then after that we went to a concert at the University of Utah that his band's vocalist was performing in).
Who proposed? He did. And then after we got the ring he proposed to me in Welsh. (I think he just wanted to hear what it would sound like.)
Who has more siblings? There are six kids in Doug's family and five in mine.
Who wears the pants? Again, we're both pretty laid back. Doug generally defers to me in matters of scheduling and food.

I'll tag Julie K and Mimi.

Eight about Kate

Kate got tagged by the Calls a while back, and I hadn't gotten around to doing it yet. So, here are eight things about Kate!

1. Kate's name is Katherine Elizabeth. That's Katherine after my mom (who goes by Kathey) and Elizabeth after my sister (who goes by Betsey). We do call her Katie sometimes.

2. Kate is the first grandchild on my side of the family and the fifteenth on Doug's side. She now has two younger cousins and one on the way.

3. Kate is very interested in animals, but toy animals always win over real ones, which we think is kind of funny. She'll play with a new animal toy for hours. She likes to line them up and talk to them. Lately she's been developing more narrative play, and wants us to join in. She'll hand me an animal and say "Can you talk to him?" (meaning talk for him), and then we'll make up a story.

4. One of Kate's very favorite things in the whole world is the miso soup at I Love Bento. We get it with extra tofu for her. She just gobbles it up.

5. She's been really good lately about things like getting her hair washed and her teeth brushed, and her nails trimmed. I appreciate that.

6. When Kate hears the other kids in the complex playing outside, she always wants to go out and play with them. Even if she can't really participate in what they're doing, she just likes being with them. They are good, sweet kids and don't mind having her around.

7. Kate cracks me up sometimes. Once we were walking between two buildings, and, observing the acoustics, I asked her, "Hear the echo?" Kate said, "A echo is a kind of lizard!" and I said, "No dear, that's a gecko." Ha.

8. Kate loves to sing. She's started making things up and adding her own words. It's so cute to listen to. She especially likes songs that have motions.

We sure love our little girl!

Tagged

I've been tagged by Laura Call. The Calls are moving out of our ward. Waaah! We will miss them.

10 years ago I was:
I had to pull out my journal for this one. We were in St. John's, Newfoundland, where Doug was going to grad school. I was working at the Dominion grocery store and teaching early morning Seminary (we'd just finished Helaman and had a Jeopardy game with Korean candy for prizes). The night before we'd been to a benefit concert at the Ship Inn where Doug and I performed "Huntin' for Deer" (our very own creation, to the tune of "Waltzing with Bears"). I attempted to play the guitar and did rather badly, but as I recall no one was really paying much attention to the performances anyway. I told Mikel Koven that his beard made him look like Kenneth Branagh in dim light. The day of the 27th we went out and got some boards and cinder blocks and made some shelves in our basement apartment. I started re-reading Shards of Honor.

5 things on my "to do" list today:
1. lunch (check)
2. visiting teaching--got canceled, so I'm going to go play with Kate outside
3. laundry (check)
4. scrap?
5. I think we might go to Chevy's for dinner.

Things I would do if I became a billionaire:
Buy houses for my siblings, and travel a lot. Travel travel travel.

5 of my Secret Bad Habits:
1. I tend to be rather self-centered. (Maybe it's an artistic thing, I don't know.)
2. I spend ridiculous amounts of time and energy on things that aren't really important, and get by doing the bare minimum for other things that are important.
3. I'm a real flake sometimes. There are things I've said I would do for people that I still haven't done.
4. My house is a mess.
5. As it says over in the sidebar, I spend way too much time on the computer.

5 Places I've Lived:
1. Fairborn, Ohio--my family moved there when I was ten, and they're still living in that house.
2. Provo, Utah--I loved watching the light on the mountains
3. Korea--I lived in a variety of places, on my mission and teaching English with Doug. Dying to go back!
4. St, John's, Newfoundland, in a basement apartment for $275 a month. It had a nice big kitchen but no electrical outlets in the bathroom.
5. Tacoma, WA--we're on our third apartment here, all in the same zip code

5 Jobs I've Had:
1. One of my first jobs was at Taco Bell
2. data entry at AT&T
3. shrub pruner on the BYU grounds crew (that was so fun. Best job ever).
4. English teacher in Korea
5. grocery store cashier in Newfoundland

5 things that most people don't know about me:
1. I still have flying dreams sometimes. Fun.
2. I crave stability and spontaneity. It's a bit of a conundrum.
3. I enjoy doing things with people but I'm not good at initiating it. Sometimes I feel rather socially insecure. Not as much as I used to, but it's still there.
4. There are people that I very much regret not keeping in touch with.
5. I have stories in my head, and have sporadically gone through periods where I did a lot of writing, but I don't really know if I'll ever get them down properly.

Playing tag

I have been tagged by Katy!

1. Name your 2 favorite scrapbooking topics:
a. Kate (the subject of a large majority of the pictures I take)
b. ummm.... I'm going to say "places," looking at my overall body of scrapping.

2. What are the 2 best places you've been to?
broadly speaking,
a. Korea and
b. Newfoundland

3. Name 2 things you do every day:
a. make oatmeal
b. spend too long in the shower

4. Tell us 2 things that pretty much everyone knows about you.
a. I draw and stuff
b. I can't figure out what to do with my hair.

5. 2 places you wish to visit:
a. the Summer Palace in Beijing
b. Angkor Wat

6. 2 things you may not know about me are:
a. I played the flute briefly in elementary school
b. I sometimes give names to inanimate objects

7. 2 nicknames you've had at some time in your life:
a. Nayna
b. Lainie
(not sure on the spelling on either of those)

8. Name 2 of your favorite drinks:
a. orange juice
b. more orange juice

9. What are 2 interesting (in a good or bad way) jobs you have had in your life?
a. BYU pruning crew (loved it--we got to go all over campus and do lots of different things)
b. Cashier at the Dominion grocery in St. John's, Newfoundland. It wasn't that the job itself was so interesting, but I got to talk to all sorts of people (some of whom I could barely understand), and the job also led to other things happening.

10. What are your top 2 fun things to do after work?
Well, I don't really have an "after work," but I'll say
a. Go out to eat
b. Read in bed

11. What are 2 things you would like to learn:
a. stained glass
b. guitar (I play just a little)

12. What are the last 2 songs you downloaded or last 2 CD's you bought?
a. The Barra MacNeils' second Christmas album (didn't like it as well as the first)
b. and... ummm... Great Big Sea's "The Hard and the Easy"? (that was quite a while ago, but I can't remember anything else in between).

13. Name 2 movies you could watch or you have watched 100 times in your life and still watch again, no problem:
a. The Princess Bride
b. The Little Mermaid (I don't know about a hundred times, but certainly a whole lot of times)

14. What 2 songs will you always listen to in their entirety because they truly speak to you?
Golly, this is a hard one. There are songs that I really enjoy for their harmonies or whatever, or songs with clever lyrics that I like to listen to... Ah ha! I have thought of something:
a. There's a filk song by Kathy Mar called "When Giants Walked" that I remember being quite moved by the first time I heard it (Bob Kanefsky's version is brilliant and hillarious, as well).
b. and Erci Bogle's "The Green Fields of France" (also known as "No Man's Land"), which I originally came to through ... ummm... a filk song about a dead cat (also by Bob Kanefsky, as it happens). We don't have the song, but if I were ever out somewhere and heard it I would stop and listen.

I guess I'm supposed to add my own question here, but I can't think of anything and this is probably long enough as it is. I'm going to tag Cami and Amy, if they want to do it.

Not a post about Batman

There was an episode of the animated Batman series in which Batman was being held in a matrix-like dream state, and figured it out when he tried to read a newspaper and discovered that he couldn't. The reasoning is that dreaming is a right-brain activity and reading is left-brain. Or something like that. I didn't actually see the episode but my brother told me about it. We discussed the idea at some length, both being readers and vivid dreamers. It seems like there's a lot of right-brain involved in reading, too, if you create the images in your head as you read. I do read in my dreams sometimes, but I've noticed times when I try to really pay attention to the words and they start shifting around and don't make sense. The other night I had a dream where I was not just reading but typing. Googling, actually. Apparently I was looking up Oklahoma! lyrics for some reason, because the phrase I was googling was "With isenglass curtains you can roll right down, in case there's a change in the weather." But then the words started shifting around before I could hit return to find out if I spelled "isenglass" correctly. (Looking now, it seems I didn't.)

This topic was the subject of this thread on the Straight Dope forums, where people reported various experiences with reading in dreams. (The thread is pretty funny, but gets a language warning.) Makes me wonder if professional calligraphers dream about doing precise, correctly-spelled calligraphy.

*****

Mimi (in the comments on this post) asked me five questions for another blog meme, so here they are:

1) Are the rest of your siblings also named after family members?

I'll have to check with my mom, actually. I think most of them were. Barb is the only girl in the family with a middle name--Nell--which I know is a family name. I think Betsey was named for the biblical Elizabeth.

2) What novel do you find yourself rereading often, and why?

I've been on a prolonged Vorkosigan kick (Lois McMaster Bujold's series), some of which I've read 4-5 times. She's definitely got a way with words, but it's really all about the characters. She does the "flawed hero" thing so well. There's also a YA novel called Lifter, by Crawford Kilian, about a guy who figures out how to fly, that I read every couple of years or so. The ending is a bit of a let-down but it's just a good fun read. I love the "voice" it's written in.

3) Do you hope to take Kate to Korea at some point?

I would love to take Kate to Korea! Koreans love kids. I think it would be a great way to connect with people. When Doug and I were there we did often get complete strangers approaching us (I told Doug it was all his years of working as a reference librarian--he has an invisible sign over his head that says "Ask me anything!") but I imagine it would happen even more if we had our cute little girl with us. It would be a hoot to kick back with the Korean moms and watch the kids play.

And, my two stocks -

4) Who is your favorite Beatle, and why?

My initial reaction was "Uh... whichever one's not dead." I can honestly say that I don't have a favorite Beatle.

5) What is your favorite song by an artist/band you usually dislike?

I've been mulling this over and I can't think of anything. There are songs that I like where I don't know any other songs by that artist, and there are artists I know who sings songs I like and songs I don't like, but I can't think of anybody who sings just one song that I like.

And, a bonus 6th question - did you go see Great Big Sea at the Zoo recently? I thought of you every time I heard the advert.

We didn't! We thought about it. We did go see them in Seattle about a year and a half ago. That was fun. Very loud, but fun.

*****

I finally finished up everything for the "Hey Nonny Nonny" kit--I got to do all the packing up and the previews, too, which was a ton of work. Glad that's done. Whew! My sister Betsey is here now, visiting for two weeks. We went to the zoo yesterday and then went to I Love Bento for dinner. We love I Love Bento.

Eight Random Things

I've been busy--I was reading Harry Potter, and then working on various projects. I'm in charge of the mega kit at ndisb this month, and I'm also putting some stuff together for a charity kit for orphanages in China. Lots going on.

Since Eva said she wanted to tag me, I thought I'd do this "eight random things about me" meme.

1. I was named after my mother's mother's mother. Helena was the first of her two middle names. She was from Sweden. I don't have a middle name, myself, but have not often felt the lack.

2. For many years I labored under the misapprehension that "buttercup" was another name for daffodil. It wasn't until I was in college that I found out what a buttercup was. I'm still not sure how this happened, but I have since discovered that other people also have the same problem (a search for "buttercup" on pbase brings up quite a lot of daffodil pictures), so perhaps I heard someone say it somewhere and it stuck. But it kind of makes sense, right? I mean, they're yellow, and they have that cup-shaped thing....

3. I have a scar by my left eye from when I fell off the neighbor's trampoline and hit my head on the frame, and had to have stitches. I had a babysitter at the time and I was not supposed to be in the neighbor's yard. My parents came home and found an ambulance in the driveway. I think I was about six.

4. I still have my baby blanket and slept with it for years. Blankie is getting so ratty that I had to put him away after Kate was born, for fear of further damage. *sniff*

5. I have the same thing for breakfast practically every day--oatmeal with raisins and banana. It has to be old fashioned oatmeal, and it has to be done a certain way. I used to put honey and cinnamon in it too, but somewhere along the way I stopped doing that.

6. I made up a Korean name for myself, Im Ha Gyoung (임하경), based on the meaning of my own name. My maiden name means "elm by the stream" and Helena means "light," so I used Im (also spelled Lim), a Korean surname that means forest, and then Ha, meaning stream, and Gyoung, meaning light. Not that I've ever gotten to use it for anything.

7. I enjoy puzzle games, like Nisqually (one I'm proud of having solved) and also stuff like Blix and Hexic. (Hexic is much more complex than it looks.) Though I hardly ever do stuff like this anymore, since discovering Photoshop.

8. I would love to get a copy of Sandra Boynton's Hester in the Wild. It is very out of print. I can recite large stretches from memory, but it's not quite the same.

Now I'm supposed to come up with eight people to tag. Ummm... if you haven't done this one, and you'd like to, have at it!

Blog tag

I just realized that I ended two posts in a row with "Whew!" That pretty much sums up the way things have been around here. We've been recovering, getting into a new schedule for Doug's classes, and I've been trying to get through all these photos. Still working on that. I should have some up very soon.

In the meantime, I've been tagged by Becky and Amy with this 4x4 question thing. So here goes:

4 JOBS I'VE HAD IN MY LIFE

My very first job was at Taco Bell, for a few months one summer. I still carry a few unpleasant memories from that.

I did data entry for AT&T one summer. I think this was the only actual nine to five, Monday to Friday job that I've ever had.

I was a cashier at a Dominion grocery store in St. John's, Newfoundland for a year and a half. It wasn't much fun at times, but it put me in a position to do some drawing and painting jobs that I probably never would have done otherwise.

And my best job ever--working on the pruning crew at BYU. We got to be outside, got to work parts of campus that some people never even see, got to help put up Christmas lights, and got to get up at O-dark-stupid to shovel snow. Wheee! (Actually I only had to do that a couple of times, so it was still fun. Heh.)

4 MOVIES I'D WATCH OVER AND OVER

Much Ado About Nothing
The Princess Bride
Sense and Sensibility
Monsters, Inc.

4 PLACES I HAVE LIVED

Fairborn, Ohio
Provo, Utah
Chonan, South Korea
St. John's, Newfoundland

4 TV SHOWS I LOVE TO WATCH

Firefly (I got Doug the DVD set for his birthday. We find them very re-watchable.)
Stargate SG-1 (We don't have cable so we go over to Scott's house to watch this.)
Highlander, the series (not on anymore, but I loved it.)
Farscape (ditto)

4 PLACES I'VE BEEN ON VACATION

Mammoth Cave
Wisconson Dells
Bonavista, Newfoundland
Sunchon, South Korea

4 WEBSITES I VISIT DAILY

Two Peas in a Bucket
The message boards at The Straight Dope (not quite every day)
My netscape email

Bruno's Italian restaurant in St. John's, Newfoundland (it's not Bruno's anymore, but the restaurant is still there).
Powell's Books in Portland
at a park feeding the ducks and squirrels
in bed reading
